What are the different reading programs available?

There are 5 options available to become a Young Wanderer:

  1. 3 months

  2. 6 months

  3. 1 year

  4. 2 years

  5. 3 years — our flagship program!

What age group are the programs most appropriate for?

The recommended age range for our flagship program (3 years) is 7 - 12 years of age. All of our other programs skew towards the younger end of this spectrum. BUT, importantly, all of the books included in our program are loved by adults just as much as they are by children, so your older child will get enjoyment out of them as much as a younger child. And if your child struggles to read any of the books, they will most certainly appreciate being read to from them.

When does enrollment open?

Enrollment for our 1-, 2-, and 3-year programs opens in January and August. Enrollment for our 3- and 6-month programs are open year round.

We also offer a summer reading challenge subscription for the months of May - July. Enrollment for that program opens at the end of April.

How often do children receive a box?

Participants in our 1-, 2-, and 3-year programs receive a box 10 months out of the year. They do not receive a box during the months December and July, which allows them time to catch up if they get behind and time to read other books of interest.

Our 3- and 6-month participants receive a box each month of their subscription.

Boxes for all programs are mailed out at the end of each month.

What do children receive as part of their subscription?

What participants receive depends on which program they are enrolled in.

The 1-, 2-, and 3-year program participants receive:

  • 10 works of classic literature a year (no boxes are sent in December and July).

  • A reward poster to place a sticker (included in each box) when they finish a work of classic literature.

  • A pacing guide and question prompts for each book.

  • Milestone gifts, which participants receive at various points throughout their subscription, such as the 3-month, 6-month, 1-year, 18-month, 2-year, 30-month, and 3-year marks.

  • A handbook for caregivers to help guide their children in deeper reading.

  • Caregiver access to an online community of other parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles who love literature and a liberal arts-style education and wish to assist the children in their lives in such endeavors.

The 3- and 6-month participants receive:

  • One work of classic literature during each month of their subscription.

  • A pacing guide and question prompts for each book.

  • Milestone gifts at the 3- and 6-month mark for those enrolled in the 6-month program and at the 3-month mark for those enrolled in the 3-month program.

  • A handbook for caregivers.

How were the books chosen?

The books were chosen based on the opinions of teachers and scholars who have taught and studied literature. There are certainly more than 30 works of classic literature for children, but we had to narrow our list. Thus, the 30 books included in our programs were chosen because they offer variety (book-length stories, short stories, poems, and plays) and are considered some of the best books to read.

Who publishes the books?

All of the books included in our programs have the original text (no abridged or updated versions) and the original or early illustrations, whenever possible.

Thus, our books come from a variety of publishers. The majority of our books come from Penguin Random House, Seawolf Press, or Harper Collins. A few of the books come from small publishers or are published specifically for this program.

All books included in the 3- and 6-month programs are published specifically for Young Wanderers.

What are the milestone gifts?

Depending on the length of your child’s subscription, they will receive many gifts that promote or support reading. The gifts are subject to change, but here’s a list of what your child might receive:

  • Young Wanderers t-shirt

  • Bookmarks

  • Stickers

  • Pins and buttons

  • Pens and pencils

  • Pencil sharpener

  • Pencil case

  • Sticky notes

  • Notebook

  • Binder clip

  • Art print

  • Tote bag

Most of the milestone gifts are created specifically for Young Wanderers. We source all other products from a variety of companies, including:

How will I be charged?

You will be charged monthly based on the date that you enrolled your child. For example, if you enrolled them on July 6th, the credit card that you used will be charged the 6th of the month each month of your child’s subscription.

What if I want to cancel my child’s subscription?

You may cancel your subscription at any time. Just ensure that you do so before your subscription renews. For example, if you enrolled your child on July 6th and you decide that you would like to cancel your child’s subscription in September, you must cancel before September 6th, which is the date that your subscription will renew.

You will be sent a reminder email each month notifying you that your subscription is about to renew prior to the renewal date.

What do parents receive?

Caregivers receive a handbook in their child’s first box. The handbook provides an introduction to the Young Wanderers reading program and offers tips for helping their child achieve deeper reading. Caregivers also receive access to an online community of other parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles who value classic literature and want the child in their life to receive a liberal arts-style education. The online community is only available to caregivers who enroll a child in our 1-, 2-, or 3-year program.

What can parents expect from the online community?

The online community is hosted by Circle and has a variety of spaces for caregivers to explore. The community houses resources created for Young Wanderers as well as recommended by other community members. There is a space to access PDF and ePub versions of classic literature. And there are spaces available to discuss literature, philosophy, and other topics related to education.

Can parents continue to be members of the online community once their child’s subscription period ends?

Yes! Caregivers will be provided with the opportunity to continue access to our online community at a low monthly rate of $5.
